Ich habe nicht als DJ angefangen. Ich habe als jemand angefangen, der DJs gebucht hat.I did not start out as a DJ. I started out as the person who booked them.

Jahrelang habe ich in Zürich Partys organisiert und dafür die grössten nationalen und internationalen DJs geholt. Ich stand hinter ihnen, habe zugeschaut und gemerkt, dass zwischen einem guten und einem grossartigen Abend selten die Musikauswahl entscheidet, sondern der Moment, in dem sie kommt.For years I organised parties in Zurich and brought in the biggest national and international DJs. I stood behind them, watched and realised that what separates a good night from a great one is rarely the choice of music but the moment it arrives.

Parallel habe ich als Journalist gearbeitet – über Musik, aber auch über alles andere, was eine Redaktion ausmacht. Der Musikteil hat mich an DJ-Weltmeisterschaften rund um den Globus gebracht und Freundschaften mit Leuten eingebracht, die dieses Handwerk auf einem Niveau beherrschen, das man nicht aus Videos lernt. 2011 habe ich selbst angefangen aufzulegen.At the same time I worked as a journalist – on music, but also on everything else a newsroom covers. The music side took me to DJ world championships around the globe and brought me friendships with people who master this craft at a level you cannot learn from videos. In 2011 I started playing myself.

Die Clubjahre waren die Schule. Dort lernt man, einen Raum zu lesen, weil man sonst sofort merkt, dass es nicht funktioniert. Irgendwann hat mich aber etwas anderes mehr gereizt: An einem Fest sind die Gäste zwischen acht und achtzig, sie kennen sich und sie reden in zehn Jahren noch von diesem Abend. Ein Clubset ist am Morgen vorbei, ein Fest bleibt. Deshalb spiele ich heute Hochzeiten, Firmenanlässe und private Feste.The club years were the school. That is where you learn to read a room, because otherwise you notice immediately that it is not working. At some point something else drew me more: at a celebration the guests are aged eight to eighty, they know each other and in ten years they will still be talking about that evening. A club set is over by morning, a celebration stays. That is why I now play weddings, corporate events and private celebrations.

Das ist die schwierigere Aufgabe. Und die, die mich begeistert.That is the harder job. And the one that excites me.

Das macht keinen Abend automatisch besser. Aber wenn um halb zwölf die Tanzfläche zu kippen droht, entscheidet ein einziger Song darüber, wie der Rest der Nacht läuft. Ihn zu finden ist bei mir kein Glück, sondern zwanzig Jahre Zuhören.None of that automatically makes an evening better. But when the dance floor is about to tip at half past eleven, a single song decides how the rest of the night goes. Finding it is not luck on my part. It is twenty years of listening.
